The construction of the University of Cambridge Primary School began in November 2014 and the build programme saw the school building being created in two phases - the first phase opened in September 2015 and the second phase was completed in December 2015.

Below you can see the progress photographs from the site, as the school emerges as the first building on the North West Cambridge Development. 

Willmott Dixon is the contractor for the Primary School designed by Marks Barfield Architects.

Above are images of the completed building showing the exterior of the site. The images show the circular building form around a central courtyard, depicting how the design was realised to create a non-hierarchical and inclusive building where every child matters. 

Below are images of the school interior. The classrooms, learning streets, dining hall and games areas are spaces which learning can take place in different spaces.

THE CONSTRUCTION JOURNEY

Planning for the new School involved many partners including the University, Faculty of Education, Cambridgeshire County Council, the Department for Education to create a brief for the new school, The professional team of designers, consultants, architects and contractors all worked to deliver the scheme. Below are some pictoral highlights of the construction journey to deliver the new school building. 

PRE-COMMENCEMENT

Prior to the start of works, a ceremonial groundbreaking event took place in November 2014 which was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the Unviersity and the Headteacher of the School, in addition to trustees and construction partners. The occasion of the contract signing for this particular lot was also marked. 

Steelworks 

The start of the steelworks on the Primary School building began to show the shape and form of the circular building. Works on the structure started in January 2015 and were completed in February 2015.

Ground floor slabs 

Work on the ground floor slabs on the school building were undertaken in February and March 2015. 

The envelope of the building 

Work on the envelope of the building incorporates the brickwork, roof and glazing. This aspect will be undertaken in Spring and Summer 2015 with the roof due for completion in July 2015.  

 

Internal fit out

The internal fit out of the school building will commence in Spring 2015 and continue until completion. 

External landscape 

The school grounds will be landscaped sensitively to the school building.
