The national Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) recognised the achievements of two contractors working on the North West Cambridge Development at their annual awards: Skanska working on the site-wide infrastructure and Graham Construction working on the post-graduate student accommodation.

The awards recognise contractors’ commitment to improving the image of construction in the local community.  Independently judged by site visits and discussions with site staff, the voluntary subscription to the scheme seeks to promote best practice through five broad areas, which are: caring about the site appearance; respecting the community; protecting the environment; securing everyone’s safety; valuing the workforce. The top performing contractors are recognised in the annual awards.

Skanska working on the site-wide infrastructure received two awards for their work on the North West Cambridge Development - a CCS Bronze award for SWIC, and a CCS Silver award for Madingley Road Junction.  They regularly liaise with neighbours and community groups and have undertaken works with local charities with their sub-contractors.

Graham Construction working on the post-graduate student accommodation received a Bronze award and has been working with local communities in Girton to support local initiatives.

Gavin Heaphy, Construction Director of the North West Cambridge Development said: “Congratulations to the site teams at Skanska and Graham for being recognised at the CCS awards.  Our ambition for creating the quality of place and working with communities is important to our team and we are delighted that the contractors have adopted the same approach and have been recognised by the industry for their work. Our other contractors have been working hard to meet and surpass these high achievements and we look forward to future representation at the awards in subsequent years.”

There are currently six contractors working on the first phase of the North West Cambridge Development and all have signed up to the Considerate Constructors Scheme.  The reports have indicated high scores amongst the sites which demonstrate their commitment to best practice in promoting the image of construction with the local community.
