Applications are now open for the 700 affordable homes in the first phase of the North West Cambridge Development.  Open to University staff, these applications will determine the eligibility of candidates for affordable rental homes which will be allocated at the end of the year, enabling individuals to be the first residents to move onto the development from January 2017.

Heather Topel, Acting Project Director of the North West Cambridge Development said: “The University competes in a global market and this project is providing much-needed, quality and affordable homes, in an environment where people will want to live.  This will enable the University to continue to attract and retain world-class researchers and staff.  In an over-heated local housing market, these homes will be welcome to staff occupying the homes who would otherwise have sought properties on the limited open market.”

Eligibility

Staff of the University, the Colleges and affiliated institutions can apply for the affordable homes on the development and must have a contract of employment with at least 12 months remaining, working at least 18 hours per week.  These properties will be available for rent subsidised by the University on short-term tenancy agreements.  The homes are available to qualifying staff members who cannot afford open market rent, which is assessed by an evaluation of the applicant's net household income against market rental levels at the time of application. This has been defined by the planning permission granted for the site. The applicant must also have a contract of at least 18 hours with the University or College or affiliated organisation, with at least 12 months remaining.

Whilst the development is significant in scale and provides an extension to the City, the University is unlikely to be able to meet all of its need, so it will be necessary to prioritise eligible applications.  Criteria include geographic classification (with priority to those who are new to the Cambridge area), "hard to fill" posts, family circumstances and immediacy of housing need.

Applications are now being accepted

The University Accommodation Service is now accepting applications from staff members for the University homes on the North West Cambridge Development. The application form requires personal and financial information to determine eligibility. Applications can be filled in at any time. The allocation of the first homes is expected to be made in late 2016/early 2017, for occupation of homes in phases from Spring 2017.

The first phase of the North West Cambridge Development will see phased completions of the homes and community facilities.  The first building to open was the University of Cambridge Primary School in September 2015. The University homes will be opening in apartment blocks from Spring 2017. The homes for private sale will be marketed in late 2017 for occupations in Winter 2017/18.
