Groundbreaking 2013

Breaking the Ground

Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor celebrate the start of works in June 2013

2013 saw the commencement of activity on the development site

This was marked by an official Groundbreaking event in June 2013 when the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the University ceremonially placed the first spades in the ground. They marked the start of the enabling works which included the Construction Access Road created and then subsequently the start of works on the junctions and infrastructure. 


First Housewarming

Project Office established at Gravel Hill Farm

2014 saw further construction work with main contractors for the built lots joining us on site.

In June 2014, a small house-warming event was held at Gravel Hill Farm to celebrate the development team's new home on the site. Additionally, construction work on Lot 6, the Primary School began in November 2014 and was marked by a visit from the Vice-Chancellor of the University and Headteacher of the School.

2015 marked a watershed year in the history of the projecT

In September 2015, the first building opened to the public. The University of Cambridge Primary School opened to some 110 pupils in Reception and Years 1 and 2 who occupied a portion of the iconic circular building. The remainder of the school  building was completed fully on time and on budget in December 2015. September 2015 also saw the start on site of the construction of the Community Centre when the Vice-Chancellor joined the team and representatives from the local authorities on site.  The first of the market housing developers received planning permission for the first 240 homes which will complement the 700 University homes in the first phase of development. 

2017 saw a sea change for the project. 

The opening of the roads and supermarket for community use took place in September. The local population started to grow with the the arrival of the first residents into the University affordable homes and the first students to Swirles Court which is part of Girton College.
