The benefits to the UK |
UK Government policy aims to promote Cambridge as a world leader in higher education research, technology and knowledge based industries. In order for Cambridge to retain its status as a ‘world city’ in this respect it is essential that it has the ability to grow and develop to fulfil these criteria.
This means attracting the brightest and best staff and providing a nurturing environment within which to live and work – including the best research facilities and affordable living in vibrant communities.
It is essential for the future of the UK economy that academic and research capability is strong in this country. Often, in the past, people with high quality skills and experience have left the UK to help create technological advances in other countries. The UK needs to have the means to retain those skills and experience for its own economic benefit.
There is therefore a clear expectation on Cambridge to develop further as a world leader in this way whilst protecting its unique historic character and environment. The North West Cambridge site provides the opportunity for the city to rise to this challenge and make a major contribution to future prosperity, not only in Cambridge but in the UK as a whole. |
