The benefits to the Environment

Creating sustainable development

The project will be kind to the area's wildlifeNorth West Cambridge will be built with a sustainable development philosophy. This will include features such as energy efficient buildings and the use of renewable energy in providing the services for those buildings.

Residents will be encouraged to reduce car usage, with ample opportunity for easy walking, cycling and public transport options both within the development and linking to the city centre.

Enhancing and managing the site

In addition, great emphasis will be put on maintaining and enhancing the ecological characteristics of the site. There will be a carefully managed plan for the green spaces in and around North West Cambridge. The Site of Special Scientific Interest will be carefully managed to preserve the special environmental features it contains. The boundaries where the site meets neighbouring land will be sensitively designed, and in particular, the Girton Gap will be protected.

The amount of open space running through the development and linking to the surrounding countryside will be generous. Importantly, it will provide a variety of different uses such as recreation, general amenity and the promotion of bio-diversity.

It is envisaged that through careful management and nurturing of the environment throughout the development, that there will be an increase in bio-diversity – that is the variety of plants and wildlife – in the North West Cambridge area.
